Redmine Default Themes

Redmine platform is a powerful and flexible tool for project and business management. One of the features that provides this flexibility or adaptability is the possibility of using Redmine themes to change the visual aspect and improve the usability and functionality of the platform.

In this article we will focus on the default themes included in Redmine.

What are Redmine's default themes

When performing a new installation, Redmine by default includes three themes that can be selected to change the visual design of the platform, these are the default theme, the alternate theme and the classic theme, all designed by Redmine's own creator, Jean-Philippe Lang.

Default theme

When a new installation of Redmine is performed, the default theme is activated by default. This is a basic and simple theme that is based on three main colors, blue (in two shades), white and gray.

This theme is very sober and basic, doesn't include the option of colors in the tasks (issues), but is very useful when working with them (you can use the alternate theme to solve this issue).

It is an open source theme, so it can be used for free under GPL terms.

Alternate theme

This is another theme that is installed by default with Redmine and that can be activated at any time without the need to download or install it. Alternate theme is a revision and improvement of the default theme that includes the use of colors to prioritize the issues.

It uses the same basic colors as the default theme (blue, white and grey) and is also free to use under the GPL.

Classic theme

When Redmine was upgraded from v0.5.1 to v0.6.0 a platform design change was made. The classic theme returns Redmine to the visual appearance it had in version v.0.5.1 and is therefore ideal for those who are comfortable with that design.

The design of the classic theme is not as sophisticated, although it makes it easier to see the links and uses coloured icons to help locate functions and options. As the other two themes included by default in Redmine, it is GPL licensed so it can be used without additional cost.

Redmine includes three different default themes that allow you to vary your visual appearance. Although there are alternatives such as our Best Redmine Themes Zenmine & Boostmine, the themes provided by Redmine can be suitable for the simple and convenient management of many projects.

Zenmine Theme

Boostmine Theme

The default theme is the one that is activated by default when Redmine is first installed. It is simple and sophisticated, but perhaps too simple. Alternate theme improves the default theme by adding colours to the issue priorities, which is very useful when working with Redmine. Finally, the Classic theme is more suitable for those who worked with previous versions of Redmine and prefer to continue using their previous design.
